Familian Spikers topple rivals to rule first matches of 22nd WVL

Holy Family School kicked off its campaign in the 22nd season of Women’s Volleyball League on a high note after its three teams sealed their respective matches last January 13, at Xavier School, San Juan.

The Women’s Volleyball League opened its 22nd conference with guest volleybelles, former standout of San Sebastian Lady Tags Gretchel Soltones and University of the Philippines Women’s Volleyball star libero Pia Gaiser, inspiring the young guns about hard work and patience.

First to battle was HFS’s under 18 developmental team against Colegio de Santa Rosa. HFS smoothly enjoyed a dominant 13-point lead against defenseless CSR to start the first set with the help of Angkaw N.’s 5 aces and Castillo’s open hits. CSR rode the HFS Spikers’ errors to generate a mini-run but the offensive and defensive assault of HFS team sealed the first set, 25-17. The second set started in a closer match-up between the two teams, until Navarro, Angkaw, and Castillo blazed the offense, 25-19.

Meanwhile, HFS’s under 18 competitive team, bannered by ace-setter Jacob and powerful duo Angkaw A. and Balagat, downed St. Raphaela Mary School in two sets. HFS team struggled to maintain its momentum in the first set with errors on offense and defense, but Jacob’s heavy loaded services carried the HFS team, 25-18. Balagat’s attacks and Angkaw’s kills in the second set secured the match, 25-20.

HFS’s under 13 developmental team faced Assumption College to conclude the first day in an impressive first set win, 25-4. Llorente’s drops and aces anchored HFS’ winning streak in the opening day of WVL, 25-16.
